CP S12 EP41 2018

Monday Oct 29 2018 Well, that’s it.  October is in the books, and with it the 2018 new release year.  It’s been an exciting year of music – and now it’s time to start working on what records will be considered among the best of the past year.  Be looking for upcoming polls and posts with your chance to vote.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Betsy Mortenson and Harrison Goodale, the principles behind Sustain Music & Nature, an amazing organization that recently invited the Burroughs to participate in in Songscapes.  Here’s our chat:

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Anyone doubting that the Album of the Year is for 2018?  Oh, and have you heard of Nathaniel’s new candy bar?

“A Little Honey” Handcrafted Chocolate with Honey, Blood Orange, and Marigold

“Inspired by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ “A Little Honey”, this limited edition craft chocolate is a fundraising collaboration between The Marigold Project, Small Batch America, and Fruition Chocolate Works. Made with 74% dark heirloom Costa Rican cacao, organic honey, blood orange, and marigold petals. Packaged in a letterpress sleeve.

Proceeds from ‘A Little Honey’ will benefit The Marigold Project and Denver Urban Garden’s work to support Denver residents in creating sustainable, food-producing neighborhood community gardens. DUG knows that in order to make lasting change, the community needs to drive it. That’s why every one of their urban gardens and farms have been started and led by local residents. They currently have over 170 gardens in six counties in the Metro Denver Area.”

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP16

Right up front I want to thank Oskar Blues Brewery for becoming a major sponsor of this show.  Oskar Blues has been part of my family for a decade and I’m ecstatic that they believe enough in the show to support it.

OB is celebrating 20 years in Lyons this coming weekend with a killer lineup that includes Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Gasoline Lollipops, Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams and many others.  Of special note – Sunday will be a legends of Colorado blues artist showcase I intend to be present for.

It’s been a very very long time since I stayed up until 4AM.  I managed to land a room to mix for the FoCOMX weekend, and we landed a prime 9:15PM Friday night slot for the band at the Mainline Ale House – one of the nicer restaurants and music venues in Old Town Fort Collins.  What was planned to be outside on the rooftop, fortunately was moved indoors into a room that was more than adequate for live music.

Stationed for sound duties at East Coast on Linden St, for both nights, I enjoyed the juxtaposition of singer-songwriters and folk singers, and DJs creating often unique mixes of various styles of appropriate music made for dancing.

I spent 16 years mixing music in dance clubs in the 70s and 80s.  Several of those years were here in Northern Colorado, in Fort Collins and Greeley.  I was thrust back to those years as I watched the lineup of local mix masters employ their craft.

I marveled at how other than technology, nothing much has changed in the art of mixing music for a dance crowd – and how the “hit” still matters most when you want to get people on the floor.  One dj did not employ that knowledge, and paid the price of a near empty room that lacked energy.

Michelle Petrie Trio – FoCOMX 9 – East Coast

Festivals like FoCOMX are motivated by allowing space for a diversity of people who make music – from neophyte stage performers to unequivocally well rehearsed, polished, and professional legends of music along the Front Range.

Two acoustic acts I thought showed a lot of promise were the Michelle Petrie Trio and PoorBoy, who will undoubtedly be changing their name.   PoorBoy is recording their second EP with Justin Roth in Fort Collins.

String Theory on Friday was one of the most creative acts of the weekend – featuring electric bass with harp (not harmonica – a real harp; a small laptop version).

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP15

So I did not make it out to see any live music this weekend. Instead, a friend of mine and I found a lovely out of the way, small town diner to have brunch at – and the green chili was to die for.  I was planning on seeing a show Saturday night but wound up having dinner at a friend’s house.

I emcee’d the Earth Day celebration in Fort Collins on Saturday, and did manage to catch the Waido Experience, and Matthew Mahern – aka P-Man.  Matt will be performing with four acts at this year’s FOCOMX this coming weekend.  I hadn’t seen Michael Waido and his guys for 8 years, as we all went in life directions – Waido with kids now .. that sort of things. So it was nice to catch up.  Anyone who knows P-Man already knows he’s a staple of the Fort Collins scene.

I was not able to secure embeds for two of this week’s  MMMM entries – the new single from Andy Palmer, and the new Head for the Hills, which drops May 12.  That said, there are some tasty nuggets this week from Tennis, Debajo del Agua, Analog Son with Devon Parker, and shark dreams.
