News Notes and Spins – October 1 2012

EDIT 10/7/2012:  Welcome Radio 1190 back into the mix …. they got their Sept spins to us a bit late, but we’ll take em 🙂 … see station spins below.

Happy autumn.  We are now about 90 days away from posting our annual Best Of the Year poll – generated by the top scoring records of the year with the results from polling regional radio djs, music journalists and assorted Colorado music fans.  I would imagine we’ll see a couple dozen new releases before we close things off on Dec 1 — so if you’re in the process of getting an album out, now is the time.

Speaking of new releases – watch for Opie Gone Christmas #4 to come out this fall – Jake Schroeder called me to say that they were working feverishly on getting it done soon – and it will include the incomparable Dianne Reeves, Chris Daniels and others.

Happy B-day Chris Daniels who turned 60 on Sept 29 …

…Jake also let me know that 99.5FM The Mountain (KQMT) has canceled Mountain Homegrown, the wonderful Colorado music program he hosted the past 9 years.  The station cited budget reasons for discontinuing the program that was on every Monday night at 10PM.

KDUR has a new music director, Stella Dickson.  Reach out to her and say hi.  KDUR is very dedicated to airing Colorado music, so getting to know Stella is important <hint>

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP19 2012

Where to start … ahhh … Audiovore.us … check it out … it’s a new project launched by Colin Bricker and Erin Roberts over at Mighty Fine Productions (formerly Notably Fine Audio).  “Audiovore is an online platform dedicated to the documentation and promotion of Colorado’s music and arts scene through the production of high quality audio and video content.”

Erin Roberts was in the band Porlolo and was at one time the executive director/general manager of KBUT in Crested Butte.  Colin we all know from his incredible work over the years in sound, recording, and with his collaborations with Andy Monley.    What they’re doing with this Audiovore thing is very cool … please do go check it out and support.

Here’s a video from their site.

Also, I updated the Colorado Sound video channel today … it includes what used to be rare footage of Zephyr back in teh day when Tommy was still on guitar … for those too young to know .. and those old enough to have been there 😉 … it’s cool footage.

Here’s this week’s playlist – V4 EP19 2012

I led off the show this week with a cut from Beast, circa 1969 – a band that featured Bob Yeazel (guitar) who later went on to Sugarloaf, and Kenny Passarelli (bass) who went on to considerable success as a bass player for the likes of Joe Walsh and Elton John, and as well an excellent producer who’s turned out great records by both Otis Taylor and Eddie Turner here in CO — as well as others.

a. Tom Collins “Pants Off Dance Off” from Oh NO! (2011)

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP10 2012

Ok, so I like keep telling folks – if it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know jack — so how was I supposed to know that the new Big Head & the Monsters “Sexy and I Know It” is a cover of the LFMAO track?   Huh?  Well?  If it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know it … (with extremely few exceptions).    I had to go to youtube to check out the LFMAO version (also finding Todd’s solo version … see below).  Can’t say as I care much for LFMAO’s version, but then I’m not a Venus beach type anyway — give me some “303” – speaking of which, Broken Tongues is representin’ – check out their intro video below … … Todd’s version of the song is much better IMO LOL.

I had one very great nearly three hour hang over a couple pints of Irish ale with Katie Glassman this week … after doing sound for her trio last week I became enthralled with the uniqueness of her voice – vocally and musically.  Turns out that before Sir Paul McCartney did his swing album, Katie had envisioned doing one of her own, complete with five songs that ultimately appeared on Paul’s disc … so, she does the Beatles classic Honey Pie and would love to get it to Sir Paul.  Anyone got his number?  If so, please pass it along to Katie.

Katie’s Snapshot gets my nod for featured album of the month on the Colorado Sound.  John Macy at Silo along with friends like bassist Eric Thorin who arranged / co-arranged four of the tracks, and an all-star band that includes keyboardist Eric Moon and E-tones drummer Christian Teele as well as over a dozen other world class session players and award winners  make it one seriously fun record … especially if you’re into Texas country-swing-jazz with a dollup of airy indie-pop cuteness drizzled throughout Katie’s vocal stylization.

The Lumineers is counted as a debut this week – although I’ve had this particular track for several weeks now, Dualtone just sent the album out – and it’s picking up mad adds at stations around the state, including  KBCO (Boulder), KFMU (Steamboat), KSMT (Breckenridge), KSPN (Aspen), and KYSL (Breckenridge) – making it a sure shot for a #1 Out of the Box (OTB) DEBUT for the month.

And just because it’s too much fun, I included the newly released video from the Hickman-Dalton Gang in this week’s post … ’bout one of the best country videos I’ve seen come out of CO the past couple of years… it forces at least a big grin and some foot stompin. … lay that one in next to Gary Bragg’s hilarious Free Range video

Here’s what got played on this week’s show.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club “This Is How We Do It in the Country” from Blovdy Tenent Trvth Peace (2004)
(D) Chimney Choir “ace of spades” from (ladder) (2012)
Juno What?! “You Can’t Stop It” from Shameless (2011)
Tommy Metz “Dreams Will Collide” from The Blossom Frontier (2010)
Electric Swingset “Inebriated Witch Doctor” from Inebriated Witchdoctor (1996)
(D) Rebel Tongue “Lose Hope” from Movin’ On (2012)
Coles Whalen “Wrecking Ball” from I Wrote This for You (2012)
Kelly J “I Didn’t” from It’s A Jungle Out There (2007)
After Midnight Jazz Band “Hit That Jive, Jack” from Hit That Jive, Jack (2012)
(D) Overcasters “Moonshift” from Curses/Prayers (2012)
El Toro de la Muerte “Things In My Head” from Dancer These Days (2011)
Carmen Sandim Sextet “Sampa” from Brand New (2011)
The Apples in Stereo “Same Old Drag” from New Magnetic Wonder (2007)
Pretty Lights “Future Blind” from Making Up a Changing Mind (2010)
(D) The Lumineers “Ho Hey” from The Lumineers (2012)

(N) Broken Tongues “The Way” from Crooked Skyline (2012)

Selasee Atiase “Pray for Me” from African Gate (2010)
Railbenders “Sweet Caroline” from Segundo (2003)
(N) Hickman Dalton Gang “Construction Man” from Vol. II (2011)

Lionel Young Band “Blues & Boogie Woogie” from On Our Way to Memphis (2011)
(D) Big Head Todd & the Monsters  “Sexy and I Know It” [single] (2012) – The cut I played on the show is a full band version that BTHM keyboardist and local producer/engineer (Hickman Dalton Gang among others) sent to me .. that he described to me as having been worked on in many different places out on the road this winter.  The video is Todd rockin it solo.

(N) Katie Glassman “Honey Pie” from Snapshot (2012)
The Swayback “Lost Lake Woods Club” from Double Four Time (2012)
Soul Merchants “Crowns of Glory” from Soul Merchants (2007)

News Notes & Spins – September 1, 2011

NOTES:

This column is intended to a kind of regional tip sheet, much like what we in radio used to get monthly from different sources .. it identifies what we in the state are airing as djs, and what the individual stations are representing musically here in the state.

In Colorado we’re blessed beyond measure by the sheer number of public/community and college stations in our communities.  There are about twenty radio stations of this type in the state today, the most of any state that I can find.  Our charts this month represent spins data from over fifteen stations and specialty shows (commercial and non-comm) around the state.

KRFC Fort Collins is, and has been, the undisputed KING of Colorado spins among all radio stations in the state.  Today, approximately 13% (1/7) of all titles aired 6A-12A on KRFC are Colorado-based, up from an average of 6% per month prior to August 8th, when new program director John Hayes installed a new / more Colorado-focused format.

Add to the list those commercial stations that air Colorado-based specialty programming (KBCO, KTCL, KQMT) or that include new and breaking artists in their general programming … and you’ve got one of the healthiest states in the union where it comes to how much regionally produced music is heard on terrestrial radio, and subsequently via the Internet. I also need to pay some serious props to KGNU (Boulder).  In an email exchange while gathering spins data for this month’s column, KGNU music director  John Schaefer informed me that ” KGNU is, and has been, committed to the local music scene for 33 years.

Every programmer I’ve spoken to around the state says they’re willing to air more Colorado-based music… with one caveat – they have to receive it in the mail first.  As they tell me all the time – they cannot air what they do not have in their libraries.  Seems we’re doing a great job of getting music to KRFC (nearly 500 titles from 2010-2011 in their database), but too many of the other stations are going without.  My advice — if Colorado-based artists were to flood the stations with releases, the stations would have little choice but to air more of what they get.  😉

NEWS:

Lynette O’Kane,  Assistant Music Director – “Late summer at KDNK.:   News reporter Mat Katz left our fair valley to work in the Big Apple and is currently slogging around in the wet of Irene.  We are currently in the middle of our fall membership drive and holding steady.  Check out the www.kdnk.org Music Page for lists of new releases, live broadcasts and music reviews.”

Grant McFarren, Music Director – “KBUT recently wrapped up yet another record breaking pledge drive, meeting our goal of $40,000 in just over 9 days! Big thanks to everyone in and out of the Gunnison Valley who made this drive wildly successful.”

Bummer news coming out of KUVO.  A posting on Hazel Miller’s facebook page indicated that assistant music director/air talent Susan Gatchet-Reese is gone from KUVO (Denver).  More news here as soon as I can get it.

Welcome KRZA Alamosa/Taos to the mix this month — and welcome to new Music Director Catie Moore.  Catie was doing front office work at KRZA from December 2010 until this past July when she was “promoted” to music director —- a hard and too often thankless task for sure, as she winds through mountains of releases each month.

Finally this month, welcome back KCSU – off since the summer break began in May.  Nic Turiciano is their new music director.  I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.  If this month’s station list below is any indication, it should be pretty adventurous.

A note on the spins chart.  I’ve added the date [month-yr] the release was added to the tracking spreadsheet – very often an indicator of when a station began reporting it to me.

The Colorado Sound … No real spins chart for the show this month.  It was a short month.  I took some of the month off to focus on producing and/or emceeing a couple of festivals.  Here’s what was “Hot” in August (other than the weather).  I do have to say I was particularly enamored of The Dirty Lookers album — a rough and tumble jouncy ride along the intersection of rock n roll, rhythm & blues, and punk.

  • The Dirty Lookers – Audio Voyeur
  • Gabrielle Louise – Mirror the Branches
  • Kim Jones – Lucky Girl*
  • Pat Murphy – The Paul Howard Project
  • Zach Heckendorf – The Cool Down
