CP S13 EP49 2019

MONDAY DEC 16, 2019

Thanks for all the FAN FAVORITE votes for LP, Single, and Video of the year.  Those polls are now closed.  The BEST OF 2019 show will air DEC 28-JAN 03 2020.

Now it’s time to direct your attention to the CP BEST OF THE DECADE 2010 – 2019.  This poll will close on December 28. The Best of the Decade show will air Jan 4-10 2020.

I got asked the other day why I added the new Mary Chapin Carpenter single, “Our Man Walter Cronkite” to this week’s playlist.  Two reasons:  One, it was produced here in Colorado by Jamie Mefford (Gregory Alan Isakov, Nathaniel Rateliff) at Colorado Sound recording studios in Denver.  Two, it’s been reported that she purchased a home in Boulder.  See VIDEO PICK of the Week below.

Equally, Philip Bailey‘s latest also got added, because he’s a Denver native who is one of the country’s top award winning songwriters, and vocalists.  Congratulations to Philip and his bandmates in Earth Wind & Fire for their Kennedy Center Honors.  A somewhat and relatively minor award would be induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, which I can almost certainly see happening once the new Hall is built and open.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

See above notes about Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the reason why she made the show this week.  The song alone would be enough to earn high weekly honors, given as it does the subject matter and the relevance to what’s going on socially and politically in our country today.

CP S13 EP48 2019

MONDAY DEC 09, 2019 – If you attended the Colorado Music Hall of Fame induction last Tuesday, thanks for being there.  It was an incredibly special night.  There were several highlights, not the least of which is our newest music venue, Mission Ballroom.

The high point of the night (besides the brilliance of the Mission Ballroom) was the Tommy Bolin Tribute Band featuring special guests Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa and Joey Porter (the Motet). The band finished the night with Stratus, an improvisational jam that showcased one Lucas Parker, a  young 24 year old Tommy Bolin clone, who stood toe to toe and eye to eye with the superstar lead guitarists on stage with him.

CMHoF inductee Fred Gowdy was resplendent in dress and performance, riding on top of another solid performance by Chris Daniels & the Kings, who he’s been performing with for several years now.  Performing “hits” from his days as a co-founder of Freddi-Henchi (RIP Henchi) Fred stepped right up to the edge of the stage and showed why he and his partner were on the edge of national fame in the 60s and early 70s.

Otis Taylor’s set was almost overshadowed by a set-stealing Cassie Taylor, Otis’ oldest daughter, who appeared playing banjo and singing backup.  Otis is not known as a verbose performer, generally letting his blues do his talking.  Cassie picked up the slack and shined as a vocalist supporting her Dad.  The love was palpable.

Zephyr, featuring David Givens and his wife Anna along with middle era Zephyr members Jock Bartley (guitar) and Michael Wooten (drums) turned in an adequate opening set that unfortunately lacked cohesiveness, and displayed a clear lack of necessary rehearsal time. It’s also too bad that Eddie Turner did not make an appearance as the final lineup of the band featured his guitar work.

If you’re an Americana country fan (as in non-pop-Hashville country) check out the newest lineup for Casey James Prestwood and the Burning Angels.  We caught them at a house concert hosted by photographer Dan Sidor, who’s also a member of the Threadbarons.   Casey has managed to land two young 19 and 20 year old players on guitar and pedal steel respectively, who are bound to become significant players in our scene.  The young guitarist is brilliant for his age and experience.

Sad news hit the scene over the weekend, when it was announced that Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids and Solids in Longmont will cease live music effective Jan 1 2020, after a ten year run.  No word on where the Monday night blues jam hosted by Erik Boa, or the Sunday bluegrass pick hosted by Bonnie & Taylor Sims will wind up.  Talent buyer Danny Shafer says that the other locations will continue to host live music (for the foreseeable future).

Don’t forget to vote for your favorites LP/EP, SINGLE release, and Video of 2019.

Other than some reshuffling, the TOP 5 at Roots Music Report remains the same this week, and there were no NEW adds of any significant reported.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Cary Morin is a Colorado treasure.  I’ve had the pleasure of knowing him since about 1990 when his band the Atoll played the long gone Linden’s in Fort Collins – a Monday night residency that had lines a block long.  Today, he’s considered as one of the top acoustic pickers in the country, an award winning blues artist who’s accomplished playing has taken him from Europe to the Lincoln Center in Washington DC.  Today is Cary’s birthday.  Happy Birthday Cary.

**NOTE** grab some coffee (or tea or …) and enjoy.  This week’s video pick is over an hour long.

MONDAY DEC 02, 2019 – Hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend.  While I was snowed in, I put up the  2019 CP Listener Poll for LP/EP.   There are 154 entries this year.  I know it’s very tempting to vote for JUST your friend’s record, or that of your one and only favorite bands or artists, but it would be great if you’d discover and vote for others as well.  You get up to FIVE selections for LP/EP and for VIDEO PICK 2019 and for SINGLE RELEASE 2019.

Congratulations to Tommy Bolin, Zephyr, Otis Taylor and Freddi-Henchi (“Freddi Love” Gowdy and the late Marvin “Henchi” Graves) for their induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame this week.
