News Notes and Spins – February 1, 2013

Goat Jan 20122013 marks my 40th year dj’ing in one way or another.  Officially – professionally – I’ve been in radio since my first paycheck in 1977, so I have four more years before I celebrate my official 40th anniversary on the airwaves.  But, it was 1973, as a graduating high school senior, that I first laid a needle to a record for the purposes of making people smile and dance.  Now of course, in my world it’s all digital – but I digress.  You know that old saying, “never judge a book by its cover?”  Well, never judge a music lover by the hat he wears LOL.  I may love my cowboy hats, but you’re as likely to see me bopping to some hip-hop as well as some authentic roots country – unless you’re screaming or being outright violent… that’s where the line gets drawn for me.  And here in Colorado, a place I’ve called home most of my life now, there’s more than enough great music of all flavors to enjoy – regardless of the hat you wear (or not).

Congratulations to KRFC on their 10th Anniversary.   No station plays more music from here in the state than they do.  See their website at www.krfcfm.org for information about upcoming celebratory events.

Congratulations to KGNU‘s Sam Fugua, who’s been a part of that station for over 20 years and is now stepping down as station manager.    According to his email, Sam is looking “…for other professional opportunities in public media or the broader non-profit world in Boulder/Denver.”

CHANGES IN REPORTING PROCEDURES
When you look at the Station By Station listing you’ll notice something new.  [titles reported =___].  I spend a few days every month scouring every single playlist at some stations, while others provide me a list of current titles they played in the reporting period.  So, for instance, for the Jan spins chart, I scoured any and all records released from Nov 2011 thru Jan 2013.  Next month, I’ll only look for titles that came out from Dec 2011 thru Feb 2013.  You’ll not only see what records are getting the most love at a station, but also how many “current year” releases are getting played.  Props to KRFC and Open Air 1340 for being the #1 and #2 station respectively in number of current titles getting aired.

The Colorado Sound S7/EP03 Jan 2013 + AN EXCLUSIVE NEW VIDEO LINK

What a great b-day weekend … well, in the very least it was very interesting … LOL. Thanks to the many hundreds who visited my FB page and wished me a Happy Birthday – and thank you (not) to my Dr. who has completely freaked the old goat out for at least another two months, while more tests are done to determine if I’m suffering from some “hidden” illness.  Sheesh .. and people wonder why I never go to doctors unless it’s a really bad situation that absolutely requires it.  Anyway… I guess I am starting to show the effects of age, and a oh-so-not-good lifestyle so I guess it’s all good – since I really want to be around another 20 years to do what I most love to do (second only after cuddling my wife, or snuggling with the grand kids).

One of the things I’ve tried to do every week is put together a video playlist for your enjoyment.  Well, instead of doing that this week, I received a very cool offer from Wendy Woo, whose husband Charles presented us with an exclusive that people will only be able to access here at Colorado Music & Radio for the next five days.

I’ve been a fan of Wendy Woo for well over a decade now.  I’ve had the great pleasure of working with her and her various bands over that time in one capacity or another.  So, it really is a tremendous pleasure for me that they invited me to present this video exclusively for those of you who visit this blog every week.  Pls click to enjoy in a new window.  Wendy Woo – Hey Bartender

The Colorado Sound – S7 EP1 2013

Welcome to 2013.  You may notice a change in the header for the show.  The Colorado Sound made its debut in 2006.  2013 makes Season 7 of the show (S7).  2013 also marks the 4th year now for the blog (V4).

The best two months for the blog were January 2011, and December 2012 when there were roughly 1900 unique views in each month.  On average, this blog receives 42 unique page views a day – or about 1200 a month, give or take.

I have no real good way of measuring the on air reach of the program, except in general terms.  It’s reasonable that the show is heard by many hundreds of listeners weekly

One or both hours of the show currently airs on
KRFC
(Fort Collins) … Saturday night/8PM .. FC is the largest market with reach that extends into parts of the Denver/Boulder area.
KDNK (Carbondale) – which has multiple translators, and is heard in Glenwood Springs, Leadville, and Aspen on Thursday morning at 1AM
KOTO (Telluride) – which has two or three translators.  Hour 2 of the show is heard in prime time / 11AM / on a Thursday morning – a highly coveted slot.
KWMV-LPFM (Westcliffe) – which has the most limited reach being an LP (low power) station and being in the least populated area the show is broadcast in.  The show is heard on three days of the week – with HR 1 on Tues, HR2 on Wed, then both hours on Friday evening at 6PM.
The Fever, KFVR, in Pueblo on a classic rock station on a Friday night at 8PM.
Post303Radio.com – Mondays at 4PM – the only pure play Internet station the show appears on.
KVNF (Paonia) – COMING FEBRUARY 2013 – station has multiple translators …

In 2012 I also started The Colorado Sound video channel at Youtube.com.  So as often as I find new videos I’ll post a new playlist … or feature videos from new cuts being featured in the show that week.  Also, I use Spotify and Bandcamp to provide embedded music

(D) = new album debut/first time a cut from this album/ep has been aired
(N) = new song debut from previously debuted album/ep
