#COMUSIC TOP 20 MARCH + 2023

April 01, 2023 – Once again you rocked the site! More of you visited more pages in March 2023 than in any March since 2015. Much love!

Every Sunday I survey over a dozen community/public and college stations, which includes spins on the Colorado playlist.

The monthly survey period is from the first week ending with a Saturday (Feb 26-March 04) through the last week ending with a Saturday (March 19-25).  Yearly spins are pulled and calculated from December through the next November.

The annual new release year begins in November, although there are some released in October that make the cut. I track all titles for a full calendar year from the official date of release.

Titles are linked to its respective YouTube page.

Spin data pulled from the Colorado Playlist105.5 The Colorado SoundIndie 102.388.9 KRFC  and ten other stations that use playlist generator Spinitron, offering search functions for artists and agents to track airplay.

You can almost always expect a nationally known band to debut (D) high up on the charts .. for MARCH that’s *the Wood Brothers.

*The Wood Brothers are not, specifically speaking, a locally based band. The Boulder raised Chris and Oliver Wood, aka *The Wood Brothers, are in the #COMUSIC conversation in much the same way as *Shovels and Rope, one-half of which is Denver raised Michael Trent. Chris, Oliver and Michael all grew up here, but moved after high school to pursue music full time elsewhere. Hence the * in front of their names.

I include Colorado expats living elsewhere in my tracking, as long as they were born and/or raised here, or got their career started here or there is some other reason to include them. So the new *The Wood Brothers get counted in my tracking along with Leftover Salmon cofounder and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee, *Vince Herman, who now lives in Nashville. His solo debut, Enjoy the Ride, gets counted as part of #COMUSIC.

I Still Get Goosebumps When I Hear New Music

An article in Vice, entitled Why Doesn’t Music Give Me Goosebumps Anymore?” written from the perspective of a 29 year old, got me thinking.

I’m not a typical music consumer – I “sell” music – I explore – I breath new music – I am a radio show producer, a musician, a talent buyer and promoter – and NEW MUSIC still gives me goosebumps.

The author doesn’t reflect anecdotally either, inviting Tom ter Bogt from the University of Utrech to answer some questions. Tom conducts research into the development of music taste and youth culture and he does make some points worth considering.

I’ve known for years, for example, that when people hit the ripe old age of 24, they become largely disinterested in new music and from that point forward tend to rely on revisiting music and musicians they heard between the ages of 14-22. Research confirms it.

I’ve always suspected, without empirical proof, that even when someone does like something new, it’s connected to music and feelings from when we were 14-22.

Much of today’s music is based on styles that preceded it – and much of what older 50-70 year olds recall as “classic rock.” So I would think some Gen X and Boomers might like some new music.

The Colorado Playlist fanbase is largely 35-54, hardly what you’d call an age range for new music lovers. The average professional musician in the US is 44, according to Alan B. Krueger, author of Rockonomics: what the music industry can teach us about economics (and our future). I have to assume then, by way of correlation, that a lot of the fans of the Colorado Playlist are at least semi-professional musicians (?)

So what is it that gives me goosebumps? As a musician I can say that there’s intense excitement in performing or recording. It’s when I hear a well written and arranged song, sung with sincere emotion that the hair follicles start to twitch.

It’s when I sense the excitement in the music that I feel excited myself. That’s when the hair follicles become goosebumps and I’m reminded of why and how I fell in love with music to begin with as a child.

Monday, March 27, 2023 – I almost never lead off with a new video before it airs on the show. In fact, I can’t recall the last time I did.

I got back to the office last Wednesday from a week in Death Valley and Las Vegas to find a submission from the industrial-psych duo, the Drood, made up of Nathan Jamiel and Daniel Watts. Every once in a while something just pops up and demands that I engage. This is one of those times. I’ll let the video speak for itself. Thumbs up for one of the best (so far) for 2023. Let me know what you think.
