CP S14 EP05 2020

Monday Feb 9, 2020 — A few days early, I know, but Happy Valentine’s Day, a holiday originally established in the 5th century CE as a feast honoring the Christian martyr Saint Valentine who died in the 3rd century CE.  It wasn’t until the 15th century CE that the holiday became associated with romantic love.  And now here we are in the 21st century.

And, of course, none of this has anything to do with Colorado music – except for the songs that have been or are being published this week honoring the date – and the intentions.

I often get asked when will be the next time I’m out performing or emceeing an event.  Yesterday, and three more times this month I’m emceeing the Winter Folk: Music & Photography Showcase, along with my friends from 105.5 The Colorado Sound.

This month long showcase of Colorado and national talent benefits Future Arts Foundation which serves to “…provide Colorado schools with instruments and allow us to host free youth arts workshops to the children of Colorado teachers, first responders, and military members.”

Gasoline Lollipops, Whippoorwill, SHEL, Bonnie & the Clydes and Josiah Johnson (the Head and the Heart) are just some of the great acts that kicked off the first weekend.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

I’m very happy to be premiering a new song and video from Andy Sydow in time for Valentine’s Day.  The Colorado native is dropping his newest song “Still my Girl” on February 13th.  “Still My Girl” is a story of finding flaws and imperfections in a significant other to be what you love most about them.

Influenced by the likes of Tom Petty and Anders Osborne, Andy started his career as a singer songwriter after working as a dueling piano player.  His last release in 2018, Reasons for Departure, brought positive reviews from press outlets including Pens Eye View and No Depression. It was also nominated for an LA Music Critic Award and two Colorado Playlist Best of 2018 Awards.  Andy can be found playing at some of Denver’s top-tier venues, including the Bluebird, Gothic and Ogden.

At Bohemian Foundation, our focus is on building community …by coming together to create and enjoy music.

CP S14 EP04 2020

Monday Jan 27, 2020 – Festival season arrived this weekend in the way of Longmont’s Winter Walkabout – 52 acts, 17 venues – one day, 10 hours.  Hurtin’ dawgs (feet for the uninformed), and ringin’ ears (even with ear protection).  OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT! Congratulations to everyone involved.

Unlike other festivals such as FoCOMX (Fort Collins), the Westword Music Showcase or UMS (both Denver), this event was not as musically diverse.  As much as the festival planners may have intended for diversity, this event was remarkable for the singer-songwriters and more “Americana” blues and folk based talent represented.

The festival also heavily favored female fronted talent, including the fabulous opening set by Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene, a packed out Speakeasy performance from Mojomama,  and a very rarely seen Megan Burtt who’s been dealing with some severe health issues since last summer.

Long time Larimer Lounge, Globe Hall and Lost Lake booking manager Tony Mason announced his resignation this past week on Facebook: “”It comes with extremely mixed feelings to announce that I’ve resigned from my position as lead talent buyer for Lost Lake, Larimer Lounge & Globe Hall and have accepted a new job in Texas,” he wrote. “I appreciate the time (all 8+ years of it!!) I had at these clubs, but I am ready to move on to BIGGER and better things. More news coming soon on this very exciting/scary transition in my life. Onwards and upwards my friends. Here’s to the next chapter!”

I msg’d Tony to arrange an interview this March, before he departs for Texas, to talk about his time here in Colorado and what he’ll be doing in Texas (and I can only assume Austin).

AND .. I got to sit down with Don Stasburg from AEG Live this past week.  It’ll take me a week to edit down the 48 minute interview, so look for it on the show hopefully in the next week or two … ALONG with the PREMIER of a new song and video from Andy Sydow in time for Valentine’s Day.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

During my interview with AEG’s Don Strasburg (coming in an upcoming episode of the show), I put him on the spot and asked which local talent he was impressed with … one of the four he mentioned was Zach Heckendorf.  This is his most recent video, put out Dec 30th.

CP S14 EP03 2020

Monday Jan 27, 2020 – Damn, I’m late this week.  5PM on a Monday and I’m just sitting down at the keyboard.  Hope you weren’t counting on me or anything. 😉

New music in the MMMM below = Tyler T., Tennis, The Still Tide, and Foxfeather.  Don’t forget to rate each one from 1 (worst) to 5 (best).  Last week you crushed the polls.

When was the last time you got to see a Denver TV news anchor strap on a guitar and play to a nearly sold out room? Friday night, Channel 7’s Shannon Ogden graced the Walnut Room, with some 90 (est.) friends in attendance.  Shannon is an accomplished singer-songwriter, who also happens to enjoy performing music from Grace Potter, whose songs he opened and closed the set with.  Shannon has been in Denver now three years, after spending several years in Jacksonville Florida, where he performed on a regular basis.

Boulder’s Paul Kimbiris opened the night with a forty five minute that included new music.  Paul’s got a new EP coming out in April with a tour scheduled supporting Amy Speace from Nashville. Paul’s songs “…have appeared on several major network TV shows such the Emmy award winning cop drama “The Shield”, “Gang Related” on FOX, the ABC drama “Forever”, and most recently USA networks “Queen of the South.”

Big thanks to Shannon for ending the show just after 10PM for us “older” folk — and big ups to Channel 7 sports director Lionel Bienvenu for sitting right up front with his wife, enjoying his friend’s show.

Saturday night we hit the Mercury Cafe to check out one of Denver’s newest neo-soul projects, Last Nerve.  I’d been looking forward to this experience for nearly a decade, since the first time I heard Merrian “MJ” Johnson perform with her mother Erica Brown, and Colorado blues legend Dan Treanor.  Despite it being a debut appearance, the nearly packed out room was there to encourage her and the well rehearsed five piece backing her up.  The band grooved straight off downbeat and never let down during the one set we stayed for … an after 10PM start time was a bit rough … especially the next morning.
