CP S14 EP02 2020

In last week’s post, I changed the way we do the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  I changed from KEEP / DELETE to you rating each entry 1-5, with 5 being “best.”

My hope is that you listen to each entry and if you’re in a band and you’re directing your fans here, they too will listen to and rate the new music.  What tends to happen is fans “vote” for their band, but don’t bother to check out the other entries. Hmmmm. Here’s hoping for better outcomes.

The lineup for the Greeley Blues Jam, the weekend of June 12-13, was announced this past Friday night.  Along with the national acts, Colorado bands include Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene, the Movers & Shakers, Erica Brown & the Cast Iron Queens, and the Grace Kuch Band.

Two new acts …sorta … showcased at the party Friday night.  The Sean Hagemeister Trio featuring Johnny Burroughs on guitar (slide and lead), bass and vocals and Mary Claxton on drums. Also appearing, the debut of Nick of Time, a Bonnie Raitt tribute.

In more personal news, my bandmates in GOATZ! got together for my birthday party Saturday night.  Expect us on stage soon.  Hopefully by March.

At Bohemian Foundation, our focus is on building community …by coming together to create and enjoy music.

CP S14 EP01 2020

Happy New Year.  Back in the office, and ready to grind.  I hope you had a super fantabulous holiday season.

I made a change to how we do the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  Instead of voting to KEEP or DELETE the song from the CP library, I’m asking you to RATE THE MUSIC 1 (worst) to 5 (best).

Congratulations to the winners in the FoCOMA (Fort Collins Musicians Association) 2019 Peer Awards, held Sunday Jan 12 2020 at Washington’s Fort Collins (a CP supporter).

Along with all the other winners, the Fort Collins based Americana band Whippoorwill took home Album of the Year, Video of the Year, Performance of the Year and Americana/folk Band of the Year.  Whippoorwill’s Alysia Kraft took home Front-Person of the Year honors .. both for her efforts in Whippoorwill and in Pattie Fiasco.

Among the evening’s highlights was a live appearance by the Beeves, one of the hottest up and coming rock bands in the region today. It’s pretty easy to see why they are, based on their brief two song set.

The Subdudes latest, Lickskillet, breaks the TOP 5 most reported Colorado titles in Roots Music Report this week (see below)

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

It’s pretty rare that I lead off with a video for a song I haven’t been able to play on the show yet, but the new single from Nathaniel Rateliff came out before it arrived in my in-box.

If you’re expecting a new roots R&B record, you’ll be sad.  If you were hoping for new direction, you’ll be disappointed.  This is a throwback record in Nathaniel’s diverse catalog of songs, and styles.  Before there was Nathaniel Rateliff the rhythm and blues artist, there was Nathaniel the folk artist.  Tossed in for good measure was Nathaniel the alternative rock artist (Born In the Flood) and indie folk-rock artist (the Wheel).

This won’t be an easy record to listen to. Nathaniel has suffered a divorce and the death of his friend and songwriting collaborator Richard Swift. We may love the Night Sweats swagger and swing, but Nathaniel has always been best when he has stripped away the layers and noise, and gotten quieter.

The Missouri born Denver transplant is destined for a Grammy Award nomination someday, and the kind of long career enjoyed by songwriters like John Prine (who he’s rumored to be doing an album with). Songs like this only add to the pedigree.

CP BEST OF DECADE – The Bottom Five

I’ve been playing Colorado music on Colorado radio since 1978, but our history of award winning (and award worthy) popular music goes back much further.  Over the past ten years, Colorado has experienced one of the most explosive eras in the history of Colorado music …if not THE MOST explosive era.

This past decade has  arguably produced the most and the biggest hit-makers and award winners in Colorado music history, along with some of the most memorable music of the past fifty plus years.

I picked 30 titles I thought best represented the Colorado Playlist over the past ten years, 2010-2019.  I asked you to order them from 1-30.  I was somewhat surprised at the ones you did NOT vote for.  Maybe it was the songs I selected from their various releases… hmmm.

At Bohemian Foundation, our focus is on building community …by coming together to create and enjoy music.

The Bottom Five (25-30)

  • Chuck Pyle – Love Will Find A Way
  • Churchill – Change
  • Esme Patterson – No River
  • Gerald Albright – Slam Dunk
  • Otis Taylor – Red Meat

Chuck Pyle, aka the “Zen Cowboy,” passed away at age 70 in 2015 at his home near Palmer Lake.  Over his 40 year Colorado music career he released 13 albums, including “The Spaces In Between” in 2010, his only studio release of the decade.

Churchill was a national breakout band from Denver, that broke up in 2013 with two arena shows and a Jay Leno appearance left on the table, after touring successfully with Pink and signing with major label A&M/Octone.

Esme Patterson was a member of the Denver based indie folk-rock band Paper Bird that she parted with in 2014.  She released three records from 2012-2016.

All Princes, I (2012)
Woman to Woman (2015)
We Were Wild (2016)

Gerald Albright was nominated for a Grammy for “Slam Dunk;” one of eight total Grammy nominations, and the fourth consecutive between 2010-2014. A Colorado based musician since 2006, he released six albums during the decade 2010-2019

Pushing the Envelope (2010)
24/7 with Norman Brown (2012)
Summer Horns with Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Richard Elliot (2013)
Slam Dunk (2014)
G (2016)
30 (2018)

Otis Taylor is the most awarded musician in Colorado music history and was inducted into the 2020 Colorado Music Hall of Fame class on December 3, 2019. Otis released five albums over the past decade –

Clovis People Vol 3 (2010)
Contraband (2012)
My World Is Gone (2013)
Hey Joe Opus (2015)
Fantasizing About Being Black (2017)

Maybe I just picked the wrong songs to represent this incredible body of award winning and popular music.  Pick any of these five artists and bands to discover some of the best of Colorado music 2010-2019.  And share with your friends, please.

Happy New Year 2020
