The Colorado Sound – V4 EP41 2012 + Pepper Tree (review) + Alchemy (video)

I guess it was a week or so ago when I mentioned to my wife I had not heard anything in years from John William Davis, and I wondered how he’d been since I last saw him round about 2005 or maybe 06.  His debut album, Dreams of the Lost Tribe, has remained a vibrant part of my music consciousness for fully a decade now, a wonderful still frame of deep Southern mysticism and mythology …of swamp moss, diamond backs, hurricanes, bull gators, floods and deep spiritualism.  So, it was with considerable joy that I caught a post by John on Facebook this week – announcing a new recording; this one a stripped down guitar and vocal release, no less a work in lyrical imagery or in his incredibly adroit guitar style.  On the first single, Pepper Tree, he begins by telling us he’s been staring at a crack in the wall indeterminately, waiting for it to blink, before enjoining us to be aware of the chimpanzee in the tree who he imagines looks a “whole lot like you and me.”  In the telling, a baboon wants to kick the chimp’s ass and a crocodile wants to “gobble you up with that pepper seasonin’.”  Cocaine contrails and perfume bombshells, an angel with bent wings and a tail on fire…. and in all of it a lesson for living … “if you ever get stuck up in the pepper tree, you’d better hang on tight if you happen to sneeze.”

We’re blessed here in Colorado to have a couple of fellas who know how to use words to paint stories with details that lesser songwriters can only imagine and then attempt to conjure with vapid cliches.   As John William Davis is just releasing his new work, Jeff Finlin is preparing one – a kickstarter project in place, and a new video accomplished with the help once again of award winning steel guitarist and up and coming filmmaker Sally Van Meter.  Enjoy.

News Notes and Spins – October 1 2012

EDIT 10/7/2012:  Welcome Radio 1190 back into the mix …. they got their Sept spins to us a bit late, but we’ll take em 🙂 … see station spins below.

Happy autumn.  We are now about 90 days away from posting our annual Best Of the Year poll – generated by the top scoring records of the year with the results from polling regional radio djs, music journalists and assorted Colorado music fans.  I would imagine we’ll see a couple dozen new releases before we close things off on Dec 1 — so if you’re in the process of getting an album out, now is the time.

Speaking of new releases – watch for Opie Gone Christmas #4 to come out this fall – Jake Schroeder called me to say that they were working feverishly on getting it done soon – and it will include the incomparable Dianne Reeves, Chris Daniels and others.

Happy B-day Chris Daniels who turned 60 on Sept 29 …

…Jake also let me know that 99.5FM The Mountain (KQMT) has canceled Mountain Homegrown, the wonderful Colorado music program he hosted the past 9 years.  The station cited budget reasons for discontinuing the program that was on every Monday night at 10PM.

KDUR has a new music director, Stella Dickson.  Reach out to her and say hi.  KDUR is very dedicated to airing Colorado music, so getting to know Stella is important <hint>

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP24 2012

Another hot weekend … though I see our friends higher up in the mountains are enjoying more spring like weather 😉

Gotta tip the ole goat’s hat to our friends out fighting fires around the state.

This week’s featured video is about Harry Tuft, one of our most legendary musicians and educators.  Any chance I get to highlight something he’s involved with the better … this video more or less details his store and what he’s about today.

The Tenor of the Times: Harry Tuft and the Denver Folklore Center

Find the rest of this week’s featured videos at Colorado Sound Video Picks on YouTube.

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP10 2012

Ok, so I like keep telling folks – if it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know jack — so how was I supposed to know that the new Big Head & the Monsters “Sexy and I Know It” is a cover of the LFMAO track?   Huh?  Well?  If it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know it … (with extremely few exceptions).    I had to go to youtube to check out the LFMAO version (also finding Todd’s solo version … see below).  Can’t say as I care much for LFMAO’s version, but then I’m not a Venus beach type anyway — give me some “303” – speaking of which, Broken Tongues is representin’ – check out their intro video below … … Todd’s version of the song is much better IMO LOL.

I had one very great nearly three hour hang over a couple pints of Irish ale with Katie Glassman this week … after doing sound for her trio last week I became enthralled with the uniqueness of her voice – vocally and musically.  Turns out that before Sir Paul McCartney did his swing album, Katie had envisioned doing one of her own, complete with five songs that ultimately appeared on Paul’s disc … so, she does the Beatles classic Honey Pie and would love to get it to Sir Paul.  Anyone got his number?  If so, please pass it along to Katie.

Katie’s Snapshot gets my nod for featured album of the month on the Colorado Sound.  John Macy at Silo along with friends like bassist Eric Thorin who arranged / co-arranged four of the tracks, and an all-star band that includes keyboardist Eric Moon and E-tones drummer Christian Teele as well as over a dozen other world class session players and award winners  make it one seriously fun record … especially if you’re into Texas country-swing-jazz with a dollup of airy indie-pop cuteness drizzled throughout Katie’s vocal stylization.

The Lumineers is counted as a debut this week – although I’ve had this particular track for several weeks now, Dualtone just sent the album out – and it’s picking up mad adds at stations around the state, including  KBCO (Boulder), KFMU (Steamboat), KSMT (Breckenridge), KSPN (Aspen), and KYSL (Breckenridge) – making it a sure shot for a #1 Out of the Box (OTB) DEBUT for the month.

And just because it’s too much fun, I included the newly released video from the Hickman-Dalton Gang in this week’s post … ’bout one of the best country videos I’ve seen come out of CO the past couple of years… it forces at least a big grin and some foot stompin. … lay that one in next to Gary Bragg’s hilarious Free Range video

Here’s what got played on this week’s show.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club “This Is How We Do It in the Country” from Blovdy Tenent Trvth Peace (2004)

John Denver’s Estate Introduces New Series Of Previously Unreleased Live Recordings

October 13, 2011 – Denver, CO – The estate of legendary singer and songwriter John Denver is proud to introduce a new series of previously unreleased live recordings, which will be available exclusively for purchase as downloads on http://www.JohnDenver.com via Bandcamp. The first release will be available beginning this Saturday, October 15th.

The first release, “John Denver Live In Saratoga Springs, August 5, 1990,” has been digitally transferred from its original cassette format and mastered for high quality download. Many of Denver’s live concerts were recorded directly from the sound board, which results in the highest possible quality audio recording. With today’s technology, it is now easier than ever before to make these amazing, never-before-heard recordings available directly to fans. To purchase and download, please visit http://bit.ly/qGhSCk.

Denver was an American folk singer and songwriter who became one of the most popular singers of the 1970s. In his early career he toured the folk circuit, and in 1965 joined the Chad Mitchell Trio. By 1969, he had decided to pursue a solo career and released his first album, “Rhymes and Reasons,” including the original track “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which was previously a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary. He released two more records in 1970, and then in 1971 came his breakthrough album, “Poems, Prayers and Promises,” which contained the instant classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” After that, the hit singles really started to flow, including “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine on my Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Back Home Again,” “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” and “Calypso.”

Denver undertook a large amount of television work in support of his music, and formed a special association with The Muppets, with whom he appeared several times. He released sixteen albums at the height of his career in the 1970s and went on to release nine more in the 1980s and seven in the 1990s. Until his death in 1997, Denver remained committed to the issues that interested him most, including ecology and human rights. He was an committed spokesman for causes he believed just, and his musical voice remains equally eloquent today, whether he’s telling us how good it feels to be home or how important it is to keep reaching for higher ground.

Can you believe it’s October already?  In all of about the next 60 days (from Oct 1) we’ll be asking what your favorite titles are from the past year … and I’ll post the year end charts; that of course at the end of the year – but to do that means a month of work in advance…. And a lot of reviewing for those who might be a bit behind in listening to what’s up in Colorado in 2011.  It will be interesting to see what titles our on-air programmers and others pick as their favorites / most played of 2011.

Plenty of radio news this month, including two NEW “radio” stations on the horizon, one AM based and one Internet based.  I got the chance to sit and talk to Mike Flanagan, the new program director for OpenAir 1340, set to launch Oct 31.  Mike’s planning a unique mix of contemporary music, buffered with in studio performances and interviews with both Colorado acts and acts performing in Colorado.  In-studio sessions coming up from the likes of Candy Claws and others are apparently already set up and ready to go.

I have to give a HUGE thumbs up to the CPR (Colorado Public Radio) performance/recording studio; it is truly a world class facility, geared to a very high standard of sound, recording capabilities, and contemporary aesthetics.

Also taking place – Former Indie 101.5 music director John “Whip” Wilbur and ex-Lipglosser Tyler Jacobson have teamed up to launch Post303Radio.com, featuring contemporary indie and alternative music not heard on most commercial stations, with a heavy dose of Colorado music mixed in.  Could Dave Herrera be willing to reprise his old local music show?  Hmmm….

In either case, we can expect to find more Colorado music of all varieties on the air in the near future along the Front Range and online.

Danielle Hastings has joined the KRFC staff as the new Fund Development Specialist. Danielle’s known in Fort Collins for her work with FoCoMA (Fort Collins Musicians Association) and Bohemian Nights at New West Fest. Danielle is a very passionate supporter of Colorado music and KRFC’s new more Colorado focused format.  Her primary responsibility this fall will be to develop the KRFC underwriting program and sponsorships and she will be playing a big role in creating more community connections and shaping the future of Development and fund raising at KRFC.

KGNU’s 33 1/3 birthday is coming up.  They’ll have a vinyl celebration on Monday 10/17, during their next membership drive, 10/12-10/22

KRCC presents a live broadcast of Garrison Keillor’s A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION Saturday, October 29 at the Colorado Springs World Arena.  Doors open at 2:45pm with showtime beginning promptly at 3:45pm

If you plan on trying to reach KDNK asst. music director Lynette O’Kane from now til Nov, you’re SOL LOL … she’s off on a five wk vaca in Morocco, Spain & France.  Hmmmm … I wonder how many times she’s been asked if there’s extra space in those travel trunks … ALSO at KDNK — news reporter Mat Katz has moved on to another job in New York. Ed Williams is on board.

Here’s the charts …
