News, Notes & Spins – FEB 1 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012WOW … it’s Feb 5 and I am easily ten days behind schedule on everything.  That’s not good when you’re self employed LOL.  Hi guys … so, January was an explosive month – what with the weather, a family (I would say reunion, but we’ve never had a full family get-together before) Super Bowl party complete with new smart-tv … and grand-kids and grampa (new spelling courtesy of grand-kids) coming down with the “flu” (whatever that means today).  It was a pretty solid month musically speaking, as evidenced by the chart action below.   I don’t have much else to share really – I am accepting underwriting/advertising support, so if you or your business is statewide and would like to get some exposure around the state, hit me up.  Equally if you’re in an act that would like your record serviced to media and talent buyers around the state. That’s it … next month there should be plenty more news from around the state .. til then… welcome to the show 🙂

News Notes and Spins – October 1 2012

EDIT 10/7/2012:  Welcome Radio 1190 back into the mix …. they got their Sept spins to us a bit late, but we’ll take em 🙂 … see station spins below.

Happy autumn.  We are now about 90 days away from posting our annual Best Of the Year poll – generated by the top scoring records of the year with the results from polling regional radio djs, music journalists and assorted Colorado music fans.  I would imagine we’ll see a couple dozen new releases before we close things off on Dec 1 — so if you’re in the process of getting an album out, now is the time.

Speaking of new releases – watch for Opie Gone Christmas #4 to come out this fall – Jake Schroeder called me to say that they were working feverishly on getting it done soon – and it will include the incomparable Dianne Reeves, Chris Daniels and others.

Happy B-day Chris Daniels who turned 60 on Sept 29 …

…Jake also let me know that 99.5FM The Mountain (KQMT) has canceled Mountain Homegrown, the wonderful Colorado music program he hosted the past 9 years.  The station cited budget reasons for discontinuing the program that was on every Monday night at 10PM.

KDUR has a new music director, Stella Dickson.  Reach out to her and say hi.  KDUR is very dedicated to airing Colorado music, so getting to know Stella is important <hint>

News, Notes & Spins – August 1, 2012

I am brain dead right now.  It’s been one crazy major event after another all summer, with two more to go – The 5th Annual Carbon Valley Music Festival that I produce for the city of Dacono (Aug 4), and then three days of Bohemian Nights at New West Fest a week later in Fort Collins.

Anyone who’s into live music – and especially festivals that feature locally homegrown and groomed acts – are in the right place here in Colorado.  It really is a very remarkable place.  I don’t get off the Front Range too often, so I don’t know about all the events that take place in our mountain locales… but those along the Front Range are treated to a number of great events every year, culminating in what has become the premiere festival concert event for Colorado acts – Bohemian Nights at New West Fest in Fort Collins (Aug 10-12) featuring a veritable who’s who of Colorado talent including this sampling -> Air Dubai, Allegaeon, Arliss Nancy, Bad Weather California, Bunny Gang (featuring Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly), Cassie Taylor & the Soul Cavalry, Chad Price, Chuck Pyle, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Delta Sonics, Devotchka, DubSkin, Euforquestra, Fierce Bad Rabbit, Future Jazz Project, Great American Taxi, Haunted Windchimes, John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, Juno What?!, Katie Glassman Quintet, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Liz Barnez, Megan Redmond, Mosey West, Musketeer Gripweed, Rob Drabkin, Selasee and Fafa Family, Shakedown Street, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club,  The Lionel Young Band, The Patti Fiasco, The Swayback, Wendy Woo … and fo’reals many many others (some 90 in all I believe).

And since this column is about Colorado Music & Radio – a big ovation to KRFC Fort Collins for broadcasting many of the sets live on the air during this year’s 3 day event.

I’m equally as proud and enthusiastic about the one day event we put on in Dacono  – For our 5th annual event we’ve added a Colorado ONLY spirits tasting and competition event (including among others 303 and Breckenridge distilleries) – and a youth music, arts and entertainment venue of its own focused on youth performances and education.  The inaugural venue this year will be very music focused, and presented partly by the wonderful Colorado Blues Society who will be presenting music educators Ronnie Shellist and Dan Treanor … our main stage show features the Lionel Young Band, 3 Twins Broadband, Quemando, Buckner Funken Jazz, Katie Glassman Quintet, Bad Brad & the Fat Cats, and the Danny Meyer Trio.

It was an unusually slow month for new titles.  I had to look at Aug 2 2011 to confirm – but yeah, we only had about 1/3 as many new titles added this year as last.  No reason that I can figure out either.  It’s just been a slow year for new releases it seems.  By this time last year, I was tracking 348 current titles.  This year I’m tracking 302.  That looks like about a 12% dropoff Y-T-D.  The upside there is that there are more Colorado titles being reported as played.  July 2012=157 titles reported as played vs. 136 in July 2011.  That may be partly due to the number of reporting stations, and the emergence of Open Air 1340 on the scene the past year – regardless, it’s great to see so many wonderful titles getting played around the state.

Speaking of new stations reporting – welcome back Radio 1190 (Boulder).  The station is under new management, since former GM Mike Flanagan moved onto Open Air 1340 – and they’ve got a new music director who is very excited about sharing what Colorado titles they’re supporting on air.  To submit for airplay consideration, reach out to …

KBUT (Crested Butte) is happy to announce the hiring of its new General Manager, Jerry Lunsford. Jerry brings extensive experience in community radio, most recently with KWMR in West Marin, California. Coloradoans may be familiar with Jerry as the longtime organizer of Camp Runamuck at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

KHEN (Salida) has begun a planned multi-year collaboration with the CSO (Colorado Symphony Orchestra) to bring Colorado’s highest quality classical music to the Salida area.  The events will include a special daytime concert and other music education opportunities for local public-, private- and home-schooled children.  The collaboration reinforces KHEN’s role as a vital community asset and voice, and enhances Salida’s reputation as a destination to hear the finest classical music. It also enables the CSO to move towards becoming a truly statewide orchestra in Colorado, serving all citizens. The collaboration further aligns perfectly with, and augments, Salida’s new Creative District, one of only two such districts in the state. To complement and promote the concert series, a new KHEN radio program dedicated exclusively to recordings of the CSO, is currently being developed and is planned to begin sometime this fall.  Watch for details.  For more information, contact KHEN at 719-539-1069. News, Notes & Spins – November 1, 2010

I love this time of year.  I love the weather.  I love that there are more new releases that come out every October than at any other time of year.  At least it seems that way to me.  Look at October’s spins and there seems to be a record number of DEBUT titles.  Leading the charge is Fierce Bad Rabbit, which on the strength of spins at KCSU, KRFC and the Colorado Sound is one of the highest charting DEBUTs I’ve tracked the past few years.  This being the first of November (or thereabouts) the next couple of monthly reports will no doubt focus on end-of-year stuff … your picks, and the top spins of 2010.  Have a great November — and for my friends in RMCR, see ya all soon 🙂

So What’sup with CPR?

I got a very interesting email from a long time friend in public radio tonight.

Here it is … I’ve elected to not disclose the author, unless he wants to come on here and do it.    But his email to me does present some interesting issues that those of us involved in ANY kind of radio should pay attention to — public radio or otherwise.  We’re not in radio-Kansas anymore Toto….

Here’s the email:

Chris and friends in the Fort:

I’m not sure if you’ve seen this, but if you haven’t, you should:
Rating Outlook On Colorado Public Radio s Series 2002 Revenue Bonds Revised To Negative

8.2 million dollars in debt.  With a bond rating downgrade, all they can seem to do is re-finance their debt.

I hope the impact on community radio stations around the region will be minimal.  With the economy in terrible shape, Colorado Public Radio’s (CPR) need to sell their Ruby Hill property (the old KVOD location) in today’s real estate climate, and a years-long attempt (with no takers) to sell-off their 1340 AM signal in today’s radio world (CPR bought 1340 for 4.2 million dollars), there’s no place but DOWN from here for CPR.   The downturn goes to the core of operations as CPR staff morale is reportedly down.   Recently, staff began meeting with senior management to discuss items such as “benefits”; items that once seemed untouchable.  Beware of the possible fallout.

Why should everyone else in the public radio world in Colorado be concerned?

CPR is the largest public radio entity in the Rocky Mountain West, a prestigious distinction which can also translate into something much less attractive when finances start to fall apart.  The negative CPR bond rating blowback could make it more difficult for (smaller) public radio entities in the region, when they attempt to secure funding for larger ticket items (capital expenditures for equipment, etc.).

Questions can arise, such as:

–  If the region’s largest public radio entity is a financial risk, why should major lenders or investors (of CPR bonds) invest in smaller budgeted stations?

–  Aren’t smaller public stations naturally a higher risk than an entity the size of CPR?  Or

–  can smaller stations present a “mean and lean” proposal that can secure needing funding?

In this financial climate, it behooves smaller community stations to ask these questions and try to answer them honestly. Stations with solid ties to the communities they serve, with loyal local underwriting accounts, have a good start.  It’s a key part of this puzzle.  Here’s hoping you can move ahead through the financial fog.

Best wishes,

So, where DOES that leave the rest of us?  Do we have a product that people trust, that they want, that the community we live in needs, that creates a sense of urgency to engage in, and that we can afford?

Worth thinking about in this era of media contraction.
